The city of Limassol in Cyprus hosted between 14-16 April 2016, the 1st Euro-Mediterranean Conference and Exhibition, focusing on smart urban development and blue growth opportunities for cities, communities and islands in the Mediterranean basin.

The conference aimed on the creation of a platform for interaction and knowledge exchange among the key actors involved in urban development issues, namely: (a) citizens and policy makers; (b) scientific community; and (c) industry and local stakeholders. The themes of the conference covered a variety of topics that are at the heart of contemporary discussions on smart cities, reflecting the variety of challenges that are present in an urban context. Recent scientific knowledge developments and technological products/services were presented to city representatives, for serving their efforts to adopt smart solutions for sustainable urban management purposes. After all, the main focus was given to coastal small and medium-sized cities and communities in the Mediterranean.

The three-day conference, housed more than forty speakers, a variety of participants from the academia, SMEs, industry and professionals as well as decision makers, regional authorities and city representatives and incorporated 8 main sessions such as:

  • “Smartness” and Island Communities: Mediterranean and International Experience
  • Smart Mobility
  • Managing Critical Infrastructure in a Smart City Context
  • Smart Tourism
  • Group discussion on mobility
  • Smart Cities, Technologies, Potential: Current Practice
  • EU funding opportunities – Proposal ideas discussion – Potential partnerships’ creation

OTS participated in the conference presenting its Intelligent controlled on-street parking solution, the OpenPark.
